2013 Merlot - David's Block
- VQA Twenty-Mile Bench
- Bottle size
- 750 mL
- Winemaking Notes
The nose is rich with toasted cedar wood and black current. Herbal notes are forward on the palate, followed by shy fruit, well rounded tannins and a long finish.
- Growing Conditions
David’s Block estate vineyard, certified organic and biodynamic. Viticultural practices included vertical shoot positioning, shoot thinning, cluster thinning, hand-leaf removal and hand- harvest.
This is the second last vintage of Merlot from this Estate Vineyard planted in 1999. Sadly the Merlot from David’s Block was lost due to the extreme cold early in 2014. The 2013 vintage of this wine will be it's final.
- Food Pairing
One of the fullest bodied reds in our portfolio, this wine will benefit from aging but will pair lovely with bacon wrapped beef tenderloin or a rack of lamb with cherry au jus.
- Gold Medal Winner
- National Wine Awards
This is the last vintage ever for this wine as the vines gave up the ghost after the brutally cold 2014 winter. Medium body and elegant, maturity has set in with some savoury/leather notes weaving between the plum, cherry, chocolate, herbs and spice. Ready to drink.
After a horrible winter in 2014, this is the last vintage ever of the David’s Block Merlot and it’s going out with a bang. Despite a cooler vintage in 2013, Pender has given this Merlot a proper send off. It has a gorgeous, irresistible nose of black currants, sweet tobacco, and array of elegant spice notes, earth, kirsch, ripe blackberries and earthy/brambly notes. It’s thick and juicy on the palate and shows a range of currants, black pipe licorice, graphite, earth, meaty notes and layers of complexity and spice. This is a highly structured Merlot with a firm tannic backbone and will continue to improve in bottle for five+ years.
