Description

The nose at first sniff is shy before opening up to reveal hints of anise, sweet citrus; mandarin in particular, crisp orchard apples and notes of river rock. On the tongue are notes of ripe pear to start followed by minerality and crisp acidity on the finish. Another stunning wine from Carly’s Block

Winemaking Notes

The Carly’s Block Vineyard is one of the oldest Riesling plantations in Niagara and is well known for producing fruit of exceptional quality and complexity. The advanced age of the vines and their robust health result in consistent yields year after year. Carly’s Block is a wine that is very complex and ever changing, and truly worthy of being deemed Tawse’s Flagship Riesling.

Riesling was a strength at Tawse in 2016 (and is in most years, to be sure), and the Carly's is a particularly impressive bottle. Biodynamically farmed old vines (planted late 1970s) make the difference here, showing evident density and power, and that almost impossible-to-acheive combination of complexity and weight on a featherlight, 10% alcohol frame. I love the genuine flavour intensity , the excellent balance and length. Whatever residual sugar there is on the palate is washed away on a wave of acids, leaving a saline, crisp acidulated-dry finish. This is surely one of the rieslings of the vintage in Canada, and should easily cellar into the late '20s, even if it's hard to resist right now. Brilliant stuff.
